Toot Toot! Chugachuga!

Gary Danson from the village has a fascinating train hobby! He has a large collection of model trains that he has accumulated over the years and was happy to show off a few of his favourites.

Since he was 3 years old, Gary has been ‘train mad’. He can remember that he used to run up and down the train platforms just to get a closer look at these fantastic pieces of machinery. He would read as many books as he could get his hands on about trains and locomotives.

Gary was a part of the Australian Model Railway Association – Victorian Branch located in Glen Iris where he was President for 14 years. The association was founded in 1953.

The association has detailed model replica trains in action that run through landmarks and towns which they once travelled through. Plus there’s exhibitions and displays to enjoy. For more information, go to: http://www.amravic.com.au

How ‘Stott’ became our wing name

Cumberland View Aged Care’s former South Wing has been renamed ‘Stott’ after local business owners George and Ann Stott from the 1800s.

In March 1868, George Stott purchased land at C.P. 95 – the north east corner of Jells and Ferntree Gully roads. It was previous owned by James Wheeler who sold the property to Peter Martin in October 1857.

George and his wife Ann Frost established the Mulgrave Post Office and General store on the corner of the site. Mail was delivered three times a week by horseback into Oakleigh along Ferntree Gully Road and incoming mail was brought back.

It was a stopping point for farmers before a 6-8 hour horse ride to the city to sell their goods.

George passed away in July 1875 with plans of gaining a hotel licence. Their possible motivation for establishing a licenced premises was from seeing customers leave the store and head south down Jells Road to the Mountain View Hotel. This hotel was situated on the north east corner of Wellington and Jells Roads and run by Rowland Fletcher Freeman.

The old store was extended into the Mulgrave Post Office Hotel. Ann applied for and was granted the first license for the Mulgrave Post Office Hotel in 1875.

In 1877, Rowland Freeman married widow Ann Stott and left his licensed hotel.

Thereafter, the hotel changed licensees and names over the years. The hotel was rebuilt in 1929 keeping much of the brick facade and is known today as The Rogue Squire (renovated in 2018-19).

More extensive hotel facilities have been built over time behind this building which is known as the Wheelers Hill Hotel.

How a ‘Reverse Mortgage’ can help free up cash

Reverse Mortgages are loans for retirees or pensioners that tend to be ‘asset rich’ but ‘cash poor’.

A reverse mortgage allows people aged 60 years plus to convert equity in their property into cash using the house as security. Like any loan, interest is charged and the borrower is not required to make repayments.

A reverse mortgage is secured by the registered mortgage over the borrower’s house (like any normal home loan).

Importantly, the borrower retains ownership and can stay in the house.

The interest is ‘capitalised’. This meaning that its charged back to the loan account and will compound over time until the person moves out of the house (unless voluntary payments are made).

The basic daily fee for a home care package is 17.5% of the single person rate of the basic age pension. This may change after the 19th March 2019.

If you are paid a pension that is means tested, you will not need to lodge an income assessment form as the Government already has enough information to work this out. These pensions include: Age Pension, Disability support Pension, Service Pension and Income support Supplement.
