Staying connected to loved ones through social media

If the last couple years have taught us anything, it’s how important keeping connected to loved ones is. Whilst COVID has kept us apart physically, connecting through social media has been one of the best things to be able to keep in touch with loved ones.

Social media is forever growing, with new apps and features being introduced regularly. The use of digital technology is no longer just for calling or texting friends and family, but can be used for education, shopping, working, meeting, and virtual entertainment. Whilst social media can have some negative connotations, there are also many benefits for an individual’s mental and social wellbeing.

Combats loneliness

Older adults are at an increased risk of experiencing loneliness and social isolation due to factors such as living alone, the loss of family or friends, chronic illness, and hearing loss. By regularly connecting to friends and family using social media apps, this can decrease the risk of feeling lonely and isolated.

An educational purpose

Social media has increasingly become a destination for education with news and stories being published regularly on the platforms. It also allows people to connect with other individuals through open debate and discussion on pages and posts.

Community connection

Staying connected to a community is something many of us cherish, and here at Cumberland View, our community is full of like-minded neighbours. A social platform like Facebook allows groups to create pages so that connections can remain in place, even if we are physically apart.

Peace of mind for family members

Being able to connect to loved ones provides peace of mind for family members who can regularly check in on their loved ones. It’s also a great tool to send photos and videos if in-person visits aren’t an option.
